Science and sauce

Building upon foundation work from Wildly Open and with website development from our local Squamish friends at VentureWeb Design, we helped Curvenote evolve their brand and communicate their category-defining product.

Defining a category

Scientific publishing is stuck in the past. Static pdfs and slow, siloed workflows are the norm, and you can forget about publishing something as soon as you've made a discovery.

Curvenote is changing that, with a CMS built for science.

We helped Curvenote position the term SCMS, or Scientific CMS, with the goal of becoming the Kleenex or Rollerblade of Scientific Content Management Systems.

Building the brand

Wildly Open got us on our way with one of the most thorough briefs we've ever seen. This helped us build a cohesive messaging hierarchy, content strategy, and tone of voice. Then, moving at the pace of science, we developed wireframes, an illustration style, the visual brand language and the website design in parallel.

We worked closely with the chefs at Wildly Open to help build a continuation to the Curvenote brand. Something that felt like a natural evolution rather than a fresh bake.

Curvenote wanted to feel smart and sophisticated, but bold and playful. Science isn't boring or stuffy, it's exciting and done by real people who care about the things they're working on.

“The new brand and website design system gives us structure and room to grow.

It is flexible, scalable, and will not age out as we add new capabilities. It supports the company we are today and the one we are becoming.”

Interactive animations

Interactivity is a core pillar to how Curvenote works, and a key differentiator for the brand. We developed interactive animations that demonstrate and support these pillars, while staying tonally smart and sophisticated, bold and playful.

At Lasagna we have a real soft spot for using interactive animation to demonstrate a concept – these were a joy to produce.

We wanted to match Curvenote's future-forward values and helped construct an illustration style that has few ingredients but would be greater than the sum of its parts, enabling the folks at Curvenote to keep making things.

Voice + Tone

Talk like people do

Having a human voice is important to Curvenote. Science doesn't have to be boring or stuffy, it's exciting and done by real people who care about the things they're working on. We developed Curvenote's voice and tone to reflect that, and use scientific vernacular to help build trust and credibility with institutional decision makers.
